Wadowice and Kalwaria

Wadowice became known worldwide when the Cardinal of Kraków, Karol Wojtyla, born here in 1920, was elected Pope and took the name of John Paul II. It is no wonder then, that the place is now the destination of many trips and pilgrimages.

In the centre of this small town you can see both the parish church as well as the house where the famous Pole was born and spent his teenage years. The house (currently the Karol Wojtyła / John Paul II - Museum) is located in the direct vicinity of the church .

Of course, in the baroque church with a white facade the greatest interest is roused by the font, where young Karol was baptized.

You should also remember that a few kilometres east of Wadowice there is Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, known for its Sanctuary, the destination of local and nearby pilgrimages. There are the famous "Kalwaria paths" which John Paul II recalled on many occasions and where, as a young boy, he used to walk with his father.

A lot of valuable information about the memorabilia collected in the museum as well as about the youth and the life of Karol Wojtyła, later Pope John Paul II, can be found on the Museum website.
